ABSTRACT
In most countries which have been colonies of economically-advanced powers, nationalism has been more intense and complicated than it has ever been in Europe. In India, as elsewhere, there are four main types of nationalism which are worth distinguishing, because they have had different effects on social and economic policy since independence.
