INTEGRATING PARADIGMS IN EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH: ISSUES OF QUANTITY AND QUALITY IN POOR COUNTRIES Rosemary Preston

The introductory chapter to this volume has made a case for encouraging

qualitative research in education in less developed parts of the world. This

chapter provides a bridge between this introduction and the chapters that

follow, exemplifying the methods by which such research might be done. By

deconstructing some of the tensions latent in the terms quantitative and quali-

tative, when linked to research method and the methodology in which it is

embedded, the chapter develops a very different line of argument to endorse

the editors' position.
