ABSTRACT

It may seem that by the end of Division I, Heidegger has given a thorough interpretation of our Being. He has conceived of Dasein in terms of existence, Being-in-the-world, and care; he has described the elements of care and their interconnections; he has described various kinds of entities we encounter. However, in §45 he points out that he has not yet examined authentic existence - and this means that the depths of Dasein itself lie unexplored. The intimations of authenticity in Division I have indicated that it is a way of Being in which Dasein is truly itself, in which we are not simply absorbed in falling and the they-self, but live with clarity and integrity. We need to consider authenticity in order to understand the deep character of our Being, in particular our temporality.
