ABSTRACT

This chapter is divided into five sections. A brief resume is provided of the historical development of Warsaw which concludes with the establishment of the Socialist Republic in 1945. We have resisted the temptation to deal with the restoration of historical buildings and, in particular, with the rebuilding of the old (Stare Miasto) and new (Nowe Miasto) towns because we feel this is adequately covered elsewhere (Ciborowski 1969; Jankowski and Ciborowski 1978) and we wish to concentrate on'" post-war developments and problems. Accordingly, we have dwelt at some length on post-war housing construction which leads on to a consideration of population distribution. Successive post-war plans for Warsaw are discussed in the framework of national planning objectives and finally we present the current proposals for the city in the context of the latest national plan.
