ABSTRACT

Pinkhas (Pinn, Pavel, also: Peter) Ilyich Vintman (1918–42) was born on October 20, 1918 in Mariupol 1 in the Ukraine, to a Jewish family. His father was Ilia (Eliahu) Julievich (Judda) and his mother, Sarra Pavlovna (Sarah Pinkhasovna) Vintman. He also had a younger brother, Abram (Avraham). Although the family had a traditional Jewish lifestyle, the parents did not give the children a Jewish education. Pinkhas attended elementary school, and the 7-year junior high school no. 72 (as it was called in the Soviet Union) in Kiev, the capital of the Ukraine. In school, Pinkhas changed his name to the Russian name Pavel and was also sometimes called Peter, but he called himself Pinn, as did the members of his family and his friends. Pinn was a dark-skinned, slim youth. 2
