ABSTRACT

The need to balance work and non-work, or resting periods have been acknowledged since antiquity, where a weekly resting day was combined with holidays that served as resting days. The regulation of working hours and arrangements is on the political and social agenda of many countries. This chapter describes vacation-related policies and norms in four locations: the US, the EU, Japan, and Israel, including annual leave, family-friendly policies. We separately discuss national legislation of leave and leisure in light of cultural and social settings as reflected in two of the most renown comparative cultural dimensions.
