ABSTRACT

Discrete data is statistical information composed of integer values, or whole numbers that originate from the counting process. We could say that 9 machines are shut down; 29 bottles of wine have been sold; 8 units are defective; 5 hotel rooms are vacant; or 3 students are absent. It makes no sense to say that 9½ machines are shut down, 29¾ bottles of wine have been sold; 8½ units are defective; 5½ hotel rooms are empty; or 3¼ students are absent. Discrete data is disjointed. There is a clear separation of information rather like the staccato effect of notes in music. Suppose in an airport you wish to transfer from Arrivals to Departure on separate levels. You have a possibility of walking up the stairs using discrete steps; one, two three, etc; or if you have luggage you can use the ramp where there is continuous progression from one level to another.
