ABSTRACT

The planet-wide ecological crisis demands a redirection of society, which will require knowledge, which in turn means that we need life-place education. In this practical piece, which opens on a fog-wet spring morning in San Francisco in a partially undeveloped park, Berg designs a hands-on, first-year curriculum, whose subjects include restoring a habitat or water-shed, producing food and energy through renewable means, utilizing native and recycled materials in making products, and creating life-place culture. Life-place education, Berg contends, is a constructive way to begin learning to identify with and actually become a part of a place in the biosphere.
