ABSTRACT

First published in San Francisco’s City Lights Review in 1990, “Metamorphosis” presents a comprehensive agenda compressed into an outline form. Offering both a rationale and a bulleted list, this essay reviews basic principles that govern all ecosystems: interdependence, diversity, self-regulation, and long-term stability. It then provides a detailed set of achievable steps and municipal policies that would have powerfully transformative effects to make urban dwelling much richer and cities more livable.
