ABSTRACT

This chapter presents results related to user preferences for commercial street facades, user satisfaction with the appearance of these streets, user choices for the best and the worst commercial streets in terms of appearance, and user evaluation of physical features of those streets that influence users' choices. It discusses perception and evaluation of residents in the city where the streets chosen as the worst in terms of appearance are located. The chapter highlights the characteristics of the commercial signage controls applied in the streets evaluated positively and negatively by users from the different urban contexts. It also discusses the proposals to reduce visual pollution in historic city centres. The chapter recommends that local authorities investigate which physical characteristics of commercial streetscapes most influence perception and evaluation of residents.
