ABSTRACT

Various human rights frameworks relevant to the setting of victim rights and powers exist on the regional level. The Council of Europe and the European Union are discussed in this context, although other regional frameworks not covered in detail in this book also provide for human rights on this level.1 The ECtHR also contributes to the development of a regional human rights discourse by giving interpretation to the ECHR in the context of international and regional laws and procedures. Significantly, this brings together various legal traditions, including those of the continental European approach, together with those that apply to common law, adversarial jurisdictions.
