ABSTRACT

This chapter describes about using online and digital sources. The cartoon made a number of insightful observations about society, one of which was the way in which museums were perceived as places of sanctity in which relics were kept safe behind glass which itself was considered untouchable. Many curators and museum educators have worked hard to remove both the physical and metaphorical glass between museum and visitor. Preliminary investigations for site work are much enhanced by online maps along with aerial and satellite imagery. Conversely, a website replete with information, images, video, sound, games and interactive elements does not mean the museum will be the same. Some websites offer information packs, worksheets and other readymade resources for teachers and pupils. Readymade material in digital form makes it very easy for pupils to cut and paste, creating good looking work without more than a superficial need to study or understand the content.
