ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that in active trust management, trust is most usefully conceptualized neither as a state to be achieved nor as an attitude, but as a macro cognitive process. The approach proposed by the Trust in Cyberdomains Working Meeting defined four focus areas for active trust management. The four focus areas are: trust in technology, trust in decision-making, trust in the sociotechnical work system, and trust in overall capability. The four focus areas of trust can support analysis of trust phenomena in military teams and provide a frame from which a scheme for active trust management may be implemented and extrapolated. Trust in technology encompasses issues and challenges stemming from the perceived integrity that is attributed to technology, whether justified or unjustified. One key to active trust management is vigilance in security monitoring. A distinction can be drawn between trust in the sociotechnical system vs. trust in the overall capability of the system to achieve its primary task goals.
