ABSTRACT

Teamwork and trust is a requirement in military operations because of the need to depend on the performance of others in the conduct of interdependent tasks. Teamwork thereby emerges within a socio-technical network of elements whereby trust shapes communication processes and enables cooperative work team tasks. The systems perspective reveals properties of the whole that are not evident with an examination of the components, thereby revealing emergent behaviour that arises from the dynamic interaction of components. Actor network theory is a theoretical perspective that has evolved to address the socio-technical domain and in particular the conceptualization of the 'social'. Exploring the notion of trust within the actor network sheds light on understanding situation awareness and decision-making processes that are examined within the case studies. The socio-technical domain is revealed as a complex, interconnected, relational, entangled state that emerges as a hybrid collectif of human and non-human actors.
