ABSTRACT

[59/1] The second day after our arrival at Orietan the weather began to improve, and gave us an opportunity of crossing the gulf, called that of Orietan, without unusual physical exertion, and without mental qualms, as the sea was now calm. On completing this crossing we entered some streams lined with tall dense trees, which here and there met overhead just as in an artificial avenue. On the tops of these interlaced trees we saw large numbers of monkeys and below some abadas 1 or rhinoceroses, which frequent those wilds; where the brushwood was thinner we also met with large numbers of peacocks.
