ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the role of information in the process of change, regarding the supply of transport as well as environmental issues. Information is one essential factor of change and an efficient instrument for policies, but it is not sufficient. It has to be integrated in a global action plan based on three elements: information, coercion, incentives. The chapter examines the three points: the role of information in making modal choice and increasing ecological concerns; the shortcomings of information; and efficient ways to convey information. The results showed the importance of providing users with tools, such as many materials as cognitive tools, to help them in changing. Multimodal transportation supply may encourage users to diversify their modal choices provided that the supply characteristics are known, integrated and monitored by users. Mobility practices have to be learnt and the mobility needs abilities and the knowledge.
