ABSTRACT

Training programs designed specifically to develop non-technical skills can take many forms, and there is certainly no single 'best practice' for such programs. This chapter introduces a set of principles that can be used in the design of non-technical skills training programs. The basic approach to the training of non-technical skills involves three primary phases: awareness, core enabling knowledge and actual task performance. One of the most important considerations for non-technical skill development is that real-world performance in high-risk industries typically involves coordination and teamwork. Simulation is used extensively in the development of technical skills and is being used more and more for the development of non-technical skills. Participation in non-technical skills training programs that focus on awareness raising and basic knowledge development have been shown to result in positive attitudinal change. The many forms of eLearning available today provide efficient and flexible forms of training for the development of core enabling knowledge in non-technical skills.
