ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief introduction into the characteristics of tourism development in Slovakia and then to identify contemporary problems in the implementation of environmental management in accommodation facilities. International standards designed to promote the introduction of environmental management systems play a significant role in reducing negative impacts of human activities on the quality of the environment. In total, this combination of natural and cultural diversity accounts for much of the tourism in Slovakia and holds tremendous potential for development. Donovaly, which is situated in the Low Tatra National Park and is a typical' mountain tourist resort and Slnava, which is a typical' summer season resort adjacent to a lake. Generally their owners/managers evidence a lack of knowledge relating to best practices in resource management in spite of the activities of the Slovak Association of Hotels and Restaurants.
