ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the areas of Thomistic influence upon John Owen and examines the secondary literature that is relevant to the study of Thomism in Owen. The secondary literature on Reformed Thomism provides several significant points for this work. The chapter explores the use of Thomism by John Owen, and thus moves the study of Reformed Thomism beyond the study of the early reformers and Vermigli and Zanchi to a broader spectrum of Reformed thinkers. It examines how Owen's use of Thomism contributed to his Reformed theology and how well it functioned within a Reformed theological framework. John Owen's use of Thomism is part of a strongly Western and catholic theological synthesis that builds upon patristic and medieval formulations. The unique manner in which Owen uses Thomism allows him to strengthen Reformed theology in several areas, as well as to give it depth by virtue of its relation to the historic Western and catholic tradition.
