ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Owen's understanding of infused habits in sanctification as explained in Discourse on the Holy Spirit will be examined, as well as his thoughts on the role of infused habits with respect to justification in Justification by Faith Alone. John Owen's most comprehensive discussion of infused habits in his Discourse on the Holy Spirit comes when he is speaking of sanctification by the Holy Spirit. The principles laid down earlier in his discussion of infused habits in regeneration, Owen develops an understanding of sanctification that utilizes the concept of an infused habit of grace that grows in holiness. Owen continues, explaining the relationship of regeneration and sanctification in this infused habit of grace. Owen then explains that there is no disagreement between the Reformed authors and the Roman Catholics over whether there exists an infused habit of grace, but there is a disagreement over whether it contributes to justification.
