ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a cooperative development approach to performance measurement in a not-for-profit (NFP) organization called COPE Galway, to highlight both the relevance of performance measurement in NFP organizations and the need for a different approach. COPE Galway is a charity based in Galway city in the west of Ireland. COPE Galway are essentially looking for a more structured and manageable system. Performance measurement can often be overlooked in charitable or NFP organizations as it can be seen as something that belongs in the private sector and commercial organizations. Most of the NFP sector organizations still generate most of their income from the government and non-government funders. They have to account to several stakeholders, including funders, donors, volunteers, employees, clients and beneficiaries. The main contribution of management performance management system (PMS) implementation in COPE has been a renewed focus by managers and staff on the strategic objectives.
