ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book recommends outsourcing of WHO key activities in a new reform model. WHO created the Expanded Programme on Immunization in 1974. Immunization is the most effective and cost-effective tools against present and emerging diseases, with a powerful impact on social and economic development. The book refers to the recommendation for a Convention on Research and Development. It also recommends legally binding regulations in the nutrition areas of baby food, diet, salt and sugar. The book explains the harmful use of alcohol. The new Director-General should develop a 'vision' for the future WHO in an effort to influence and lead member States. The new Director-General should guide the adaptation of WHO to the new constraints and challenges posed by the many old and new actors on the global health stage and to the new political and economic challenges affecting all international organizations.
