ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a few cases of learning-based approaches and shows some concrete examples that link the big picture and the little picture. It demonstrates that there is genuinely something different, special and especially excellent about strategic learning and about the self managed learning method. The chapter is concerned with the first case, the Wines and Spirits Division of Allied Domecq. The company wanted to develop a culture that supported learning and change. Self managed learning (SML) started off in the late 1970s as a heavily individually focused approach. SML is seen as being both about career development and personal development. Developing set advisers and mentors is often a start point for widespread development of organizational capability to support and foster learning. Strategic learning is becoming a key part of an organization's competitive advantage. The chapter discusses some case examples and shows how this use of SML is part of a strategic learning approach.
