ABSTRACT

Afew days after the arrival of Cabral’s flagship, Dom Manuel wrote to Ferdinand and Isabella, telling them briefly what had occurred during the voyage. In this letter there is apparently no attempt to conceal anything of importance which happened, and in general it is not contradicted by later writers. If authentic, this letter is the most authoritative account which we have of the whole voyage. It was apparently written by the king on the 27th of July, from Santarem, where he had received a report that Cabral’s main fleet had arrived. 1
