ABSTRACT

The extent of the transformation of post-Cold War Italian defence policy has been massive. Indeed, Italy has profoundly modified institutions and doctrine, making its military contribution through the constant commitment of forces in multinational operations abroad. Dyson (2008) identifies a convergence between the aims of British and French defence policy after the end of the bipolar era as they shifted from the core objective of territorial defence towards expeditionary crisis-management missions to deal with multidimensional threats to international instability. Italy followed the same trajectory, finally adopting a more dynamic defence policy after years of inaction due to the bipolar (domestic and international) constraints. Thus, specifically because of this historical background, Italy’s evolution has been much greater. The exceptional advance of logistics, which have been substantially altered and improved in order to support wider military activism abroad, is one of the best examples of this innovation.
