ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the blurring boundaries between professional and private life in the context of the use of ICTs in a small business. In order to tackle the issue of social dynamics in relation to ICT use in small businesses we need to identify the main characteristics that help to explain their experience of ICTs. The majority of research concerning Information and Communication Technology (ICT) implementation in small businesses starts from a generic approach and there by fails to expose the significant differences between companies. Within social-theoretical knowledge there is still a lack of assessment concerning the capacity of SMEs and micro-enterprises to incorporate ICTs into their work praxis. The wider social-economic context in which business affairs are conducted, divided into macro and meso levels, plays a crucial role. The socio-professional situation takes into account the mix of professional and private characteristics.
