ABSTRACT

There is evidence for concluding that Walter Raleigh's main propagandists in the early months were the Indians, Manteo and Wanchese, who had been brought to England in September and had rapidly learnt English. In Raleigh's household there was at this time Thomas Hariot, who had been employed to teach Raleigh mathematics and had instructed the pilots and masters of Amadas's expedition in navigation for their American voyage. Among the powers which Raleigh and his friends had tried to obtain from parliament in December were rights to bring certain prisoners to America, and to impress other persons and also shipping for the expedition. The reference to Raleigh's bill infers the committee was packed with adventurers in the 1585 expedition, and it may imply that more members of the House went with Grenville than the other evidence indicates.
