NoidentifiabletribalnamesaregiveninthePME,andvery fewcluestowhatsortofpeopletheinhabitantswere;different tribalgroupsaredesignatedinamannerwhichdoesnomore thanindicatesomeoutstandingcharacteristic,inAgatharkhides, Strabo,andtheP~\IE,anditisonlyinthelastthatanyindication isgivenoftheirposition.BetweenBerenikeandPtolcmais livedtheIkhthuophagoiorFish-eaters,onthecoast;behind theminlandweretheBarbaroi(Berbers),theAgriophagoior Wildanin1al-eaters,andtheMoskhophagoiorPlant-eaters; thesewereundertheruleof'chiefs',Ka-ra-rvpa-,·vlSa.Afterthe MoskhophagoiwasPtoletnaisoftheHuntings,andthepeople alongthisstretchofthecoastweretheBarbaroi,whowerethe ancestorsoftheHamiticSaho,apastoralpeople;andsouthof Adouli,theeasternsideofEthiopia,mainlystarkdesert,isthe landofthe'AfarorDanakil,anotherHatniticpeople,who extendsouthwardsasfarasDjibouti.Eastward,frornhere toCapeGardafui,inthe'HornofAfrica',waswhatthe PMEcalls'theotherBarbaria',thelandoftheSotnali,also Hamites,whoseancestorswereprobablyhere,underadifferent name,inthe1stcenturyandevenearlier.Thewholeof thisregionwasundertribalchiefs(see:chapter14,p.29 above).
