ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses a railway transport development project in north-western Italy, seen through the complex and elongated phases of its planning. The project belongs to the umbrella of the TEN-T Corridor 5, one of the major and most contested of the EU trans-national traffic networks. On December 12th, 1992 in the cinema of Condove members of the NO-TAV movement, together with an academic from the Politecnico University of Turin presented a noise simulation of the TAV train crossing the valley. Feasibility studies sponsored by the Italian Railway Company have repeatedly pointed out that there are two arguments for supporting the TAV line in the Valley. Apart for the fear of further traffic congestion, the anti-TAV (NO-TAV) movement supporters strongly emphasize three points against the project. They are the environmental impact, the economic viability and the political background implications.
