ABSTRACT

Relation', the Mongols regarded the world as divided into two main parts, an eastem region ruled by themselves and hence known as A!oal and a western region which was apparendy coterminous with Latin Christendom: Onnerfors, Hystona Tartarorum C. de Bridta monachi, p. 4. Possibly the same idea underlies the assumption by the Il-khin Ghazan, following his conversion to Islam in 1295, of the style Padishah-i Islam ('sovereign of Islam') rather than some title expressing kingship over Persia alone.
