ABSTRACT
Whilst Coates had already begun to establish a successful career as a composer during the 1910s, during the 1920s he would arrive at full compositional maturity. It was during this period that he could finally stop composing ballads (even though he wrote several of his most popular examples of the genre during these years) and focus almost exclusively on orchestral works. Coates’ own success and stability was also mirrored in contemporary politics, as it marked a return to international stability after the First World War. In Britain, Lloyd George had been ousted as Prime Minister leading to the Conservative Party dominating interwar politics.
