ABSTRACT

The struggle in the North of England in 1715 was part of a wider struggle taking place throughout Britain in 1715–16. Because it began later than the contest in Scotland and ended sooner, and involved fewer combatants, it has often been relegated as an episode of lesser significance. Clearly, its climax did not lead to an end of the rebellion, as Argyle, naturally concerned as ever for his own command, was quick to observe to his political masters.
