ABSTRACT

Into this land, with the nature of the people being so different from that of the people in the land in which we were reared, the same being true of the climate and customs, as well as its faith and ceremonies, into this land, I say, we went to instruct them, exposed to whatever this cause should bring upon us, adapting ourselves to the life of these people and regions to the same extent as a person who was to live his whole life among them as among relatives and brothers; for we took them as such, for love of God. And this did not prove difficult for us, considering the purpose for which we were undertaking it, and we did not consider it a hardship to be separated and depart so far from our native lands for another so foreign, travelling to get there close to seven thousand leagues' distance; for there are that many leagues to sail and a certain number to walk before reaching that town or village of Maigoga, where we had entered when I began this digression to write of these kingdoms and their inhabitants, in the account I have just given.
