ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the level of cooperation between Taiwanese merchants and the government of the Republic of China (ROC) in the trade between Taiwan and Japan in the period, 1950–1961. It does this by drawing upon publications from a Japanese private company (Sumitomo) and Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), as well as the governmental archives of the ROC deposited in Taiwan. 1
