ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the essential elements of human rights based approach to tackling child poverty in the United Kingdom (UK) including the inter-relationship between child poverty and the relevant international human rights treaties. It presents the case for a human rights approach to tackling child poverty in the UK and summarizes current opportunities to further the implementation of a rights based approach to addressing child poverty at both the UK and Wales levels of governance. The chapter refers the Welsh Assembly Government took much notice of the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Wellbeing report. It examines the direction given by the most relevant international human rights treaties as to the key elements of a rights based approach. The international treaty of most relevance to poverty alleviation is the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).
