ABSTRACT

This chapter presents initial validation of the model by undertaking an analysis of an incident of fratricide and outlining an attempt to map the incident onto the F3 model. The in-depth analysis provided by case studies is argued to be the most appropriate approach to explore rare incidents in unique domains such as fratricide. The 7th Armoured Brigade was deployed in February 2003, beginning operations in southern Iraq in March 2003. The Brigade was tasked by Divisional Head Quarters to protect four key bridges over the Shatt al Basra canal. The use of case studies represents an intensive rather than extensive analysis, an emphasis on depth rather than breadth, on exploring a large number of variables, as opposed to a large number of subjects. The creation and analysis of this ideal scenario provides a benchmark against which to compare the incident of fratricide.
