ABSTRACT

There are a number of hero buildings constructed across Europe to commemorate the fallen in the First World War. One thinks for example of the Menin Gate, completed in 1932 in Ypres, Belgium, of Thiepval completed in 1927 in Picardy, and of the neo-medieval castle completed at Tannenberg in Germany in 1927. All these buildings have their own distinct architectural style. While, in a functional sense, the Scottish National War Memorial (SNWM) is clearly related to these buildings, nonetheless it also belongs to a particularly Scottish tradition.
