ABSTRACT

This section is about the potential of Appraisal and Performance Reviews (APR) as a tactic in work based learning. The word ‘potential’ is used here for a number of reasons associated with the range of ways in which performance appraisal is conducted, not all of which are obviously conducive either to reviewing learning (as distinct from performance) or to setting learning goals. APR is conducted in a variety of ways in different organizations, although formal schemes typically have two elements.
