ABSTRACT

This section looks at the use of ‘tests’ designed for people to gather information about themselves: their personal characteristics, qualities, interests, abilities, values or motives. The range of tests available now is huge. Note that we have used the word ‘test’ here although many suppliers of such materials emphasize that they do not provide tests, as the latter term is associated with right/wrong answers and with negative feelings from people doing them. Hence we have mentioned two other terms in the title, namely ‘instruments’ and ‘checklists’. Note also that the most popular ‘test’ used in organizations is called the ‘Myers-Briggs Type Inventory’ (MBTI for short), that is, it does not claim to be a test in its title.
