ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys and analyses proposals to reform the G20 and the closely related G8, and discusses reforms already achieved. It examines a variety of reform proposals ranging from membership changes and agenda development to institutional restructuring and improvement of processes; analyses the relationship between the G8 and the G20 and between the IMF and the G20; looks at groups and initiatives closely related to the G8 and G20; outlines various potential trajectories of the G8 and the G20; reviews challenges for the G20 as it faces the future; and presents overall conclusions. For a more detailed treatment of the role of nonmembers and potential members of the G8 and G20, see Chapter 2.
