ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book presents an overview of transatlantic relations starting from the Cold War area. The issue of such EU security structures entirely independent of NATO caused some ruffles within both the EU and NATO in 2003, particularly the question of independent EU headquarters. The prediction is mirrored in the shifting balance in European security from NATO to the EU. The EU and NATO both adapted to new security challenges over the years. From the 1990s onwards, their functions thus started to converge from two different sides. The question of the relationship between the European Rapid Reaction Force and the NATO Response Force is another aspect of the theoretical question of NATO primacy. Lastly, EU-NATO cooperation in security of information, which has seen very little scholarly attention so far, highlights the importance of values in the EU-NATO relationship.
