ABSTRACT

During this period the emperor took every chance he could to remind the army of their honoured place in his regime. Alongside loyalty rituals, he employed symbolic tools in his attempts to bind the army more closely to his cause. This chapter will examine the three most significant of these symbolic tools: (1) military standards (signa militaria), (2) honorific epithets and (3) coinage honouring the army. Although the role of each differed slightly, this suite of tools was meant to remind the troops that they enjoyed a unique relationship with their emperor in the hope that they would identify more closely with his cause.
