ABSTRACT

The most important influence on interpersonal relations in flight safety is the interactions that occur among crewmembers. In the global aviation community, crew resource management (CRM) has become synonymous with flight safety. No matter how CRM is conceived globally, synergy is at the core of CRM. How the crewmembers work together affects the performance of the crew as well as the flight safety. In a cockpit, there is only one captain and one first officer. The captain is expected to take the lead and give orders while the first officer is expected to follow and take the orders. Therefore, the main concern in a cockpit is then the power operation between the crew. Because of the low power distance inherited in the basic design of CRM, as CRM prevails over the world, the primary training of CRM usually falls into the realm of lowering the power distance.
