ABSTRACT

Western societies have long been using an alphabetic language and writing, forming the kind of thinking that emphasizes sequence and logic. Within this mindset, what would they see and what kind of perspective would they hold when facing aviation safety? What we can be sure of is that they will undoubtedly see a sequence that is lined up according to the logic of cause and effect. And if they want to find some everyday words to illustrate aviation safety, the domino, the chain, or James Reason’s “swiss cheese” model (emphasizing defense in depth) would appear to be very natural and even logical choices.
