ABSTRACT
A fourth democratic wave? The Arab Spring encompassed a momentum for change that appeared to challenge exceptionalism’s long-held assumptions. In many Arab states, movements demanding change appeared to possess traits identified by Huntington’s third wave democratization theory (Huntington, 1991) as democratic markers.
