ABSTRACT

When the bad tidings of the death of Gómez Pérez arrived in Manila on 28 October 1593, the feast of St Simon and St Jude, Rojas held a council of war and doubled the guards. He was scared of what the local Chinese might do.

The news of the seizure of the galley was soon known in Manila, and as a result of the hubbub the citizens and soldiers there assembled in the house of Licentiate Pedro de Rojas to discuss what should be done. The first thing they did was to elect the latter as Governor and Captain-general on 29 October, and then, Captain don Juan Ronquillo del Castillo was sent with other officers with two frigates (there being no other vessels) in pursuit of the galley. 1
