T h e Grand Duke refused to take this money. And whilst this quarrel was going on, En Berenguer de Entenza came to Romania and brought full three hundred horsemen and full a thousand almugavars. And when he came to Gallipoli, he found that the Grand Duke was at Con stantinople, and he sent him two knights to ask what he wished him to do. And the Grand Duke sent to tell him to come to Constantinople. And when he came to Constantinople, the Emperor received him very well, and the Grand Duke received him still better. And when he had been there a day, the Grand Duke went to the Emperor and said to him :— “ Lord, this rich hom is one of the greatest nobles of Spain below the rank of a king’s son, and is one of the most accomplished knights of the world and is to me as a brother. And he has come to serve you, for your honour and for love of me, wherefore I must give him a notable satisfaction, and so, by your leave, I shall give him the baton and cap of Grand Duke, and henceforth let him be Grand Duke." And the Emperor said he was content, and when he saw the generosity of the Grand Duke, that he was ready to divest himself of the office of Grand Duke, he said to himself that his generosity should be of benefit to him.
