ABSTRACT
Chapter 3 of this book summarized the various trends which occurred over the period 1979–97 and the chapters in Part II of the book described how these policy trends had impacted on the practice of public sector management. Chapter 10 considered in some depth a wide range of trends impacting on the UK public sector now, and likely to impact in the foreseeable future. These trends covered both government policies and factors external to government. In this chapter consideration is given to the way in which these trends are likely to impact on the public sector and its management practices. It must be emphasized, however, that this is not an exact science and there is a considerable degree of crystal-ball gazing here, and the analysis undertaken must be viewed with a considerable degree of caution. In particular, this analysis covers the impact on:
public sector configuration
internal organization and culture of PSOs
public sector management approaches
public sector management skills.
