ABSTRACT

The Sidney family have had a powerful impact on the history, monuments, and letters of early modern ireland. Most important among them, in terms of his military and administrative legacy, was undoubtedly Sir Henry Sidney (1529-86) (illustration 5). He helped to lead the re-conquest, colonization, and administrative reforms of the country during the reigns of Queens Mary and elizabeth i, with often bloody results. Historians, art historians, archaeologists, and literary scholars continue to study his acts in ireland and the monuments he left behind.1
