To many of us, one of the unfortunate aspects of 9/11 is that the Western public discourse surrounding it soon became dominated by a discussion of Islam. People began to ask: does the religion encourage violence? Can a pious Muslim be a peaceful one? Is Islam compatible with democracy? And so on.
